With summer coming to an end I really am looking forward to finding some fun things to do with Emily (and Brody of course) that don't include water. Living in Indiana there are definitely four seasons and Fall is by far my favorite! I'll be sharing 10 simple, fun, and CHEAP activities to do with toddlers today.Read More
I'm so excited to finally begin sharing with you all about our family capsule wardrobes! I've been working on Emily's closet first. I really wanted to declutter our lives and simplify things so cutting down on clothing just made sense. There is less laundry, less time choosing outfits, less money spent, and more time DOING things and making memories!
So what IS a capsule wardrobe?
When I was researching capsule wardrobes I learned two basic rules which I used as guidelines:
- Everything needs to "go" together
- Don't skimp on quality
Now, let's be real, I started doing this in order to simplify our lives and to save money in the long run, so my primary objective wasn't just to get rid of everything we already owned and start new. I wanted to have simple, quality staple pieces that would hold up through multiple play dates, washes, and everything in between. I chose to stick to a few brands in order to maintain a cohesive style and have predictable sizing. Almost all of Emily's clothing is from Zara and Gap. We have a couple small shop/handmade pieces as well which are some of my favorites!
As you can clearly see when looking at Emily's closet I chose to stick with two primary colors: cream and blue. I'm a sucker for denim and just feel like it's so classic! I have thrown in a couple other pieces as well and one patterned romper that I just can't get rid of.
The only two pieces you're not seeing that's included in Em's capsule are her black leggings and brown Saltwater sandals; she's wearing them!
Not including shoes and and hair accessories, with the pieces listed below I should be able to make 94 outfits! Like, seriously!?!
When I began this process I was so overwhelmed. Emily had, no joke, about 200 pieces to go through! One morning I was so tired of it seeming like I took forever to pick out or even find an outfit for her, I was done. I threw every single thing on her bed and handpicked what I wanted to keep to begin her capsule. There are lots of basic pieces that, to me, seem classic. The colors, no characters, the fit, the fact that there is room to grow (which I never used to do with her clothing)...it all just set my mind at ease. One of the most important reasons I loved the idea of a capsule wardrobe was that because the pieces are mostly staples they will transition to other seasons just be adding or subtracting certain things, like a jacket or wearing boots instead of sandals. Although we're in the dead of summer here in Indiana, Emily has slight eczema so I tend to keep her in light weight leggings that cover the back of her knees throughout the year. Otherwise she'll scratch herself way too bad. Anyway!... I hope this post helps and inspires some of you that are interested in trying this out for your family! I'll be sure to keep you all updated on how it goes and be sure to follow along on Instagram to see our daily capsules in action!
Why 36 pieces?
I saw lots of different numbers when I was researching capsule wardrobes. I chose to stick between 33-37 pieces and ended up with 36. I don't feel like I have a lot of repeating pieces, outfits can be dressed up or down, and Emily can help pick out her own outfits!

Emily really likes pink so I did include a couple pink hair accessories I made. These Mason Dixon Made unisex boots are THE best ever. The craftsmanship is amazing and I love that they offer other shoestring options. Each shoestring color totally changes the feel of the boots. I also adore that someday these babies will be passed down to Brody! I'm addicted to these Old Navy clogs, too. I'm not kidding when I say I have one of every size they made up to size 11.
So here we are in February in good old Indiana. Usually our temperatures are pretty chilly still, sometimes we even have snow on the ground still. It's shocking for us Hoosiers to have this amazing Spring like weather so early in the year! I know mother nature is just teasing us though but we'll take it for as long as we can get it!
