So what does a stay at home mom do all day? There definitely is no "one size fits all" in this category. Everyone's life and lifestyles are different. I wanted to document through photography what my day as a stay at home mom looks like from the time the babies wake up just until Daddy comes home at 4:00 pm. I feel like there's a misconception that parents who stay home with their children sit them in front of the television all day and that's it. I'm sure there are some that do that, but not me. Here's a look at 8-9 hours of my day...
6:00 am-ish and Emily wakes up and toddles downstairs. I can usually get her to snuggle for a little bit until Brody wakes up around 7:00 am. That's crucial for me since I'm unable to fall asleep before midnight!
Once brody wakes up it's diaper change time and morning milk. I make them breakfast, something simple like bananas and graham crackers or yogurt and goldfish crackers. After breakfast is the time I allow for a tv show. We love The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Toy Story, and Trolls! The amount of time I allow for this varies depending on how the kiddos are acting.
Between 8:30-10:00 am is when I'll run errands like grocery shopping with the kiddos at Target or getting out to go to the post office and grab some Starbucks and come back home. I really like getting out of the house even if it's just for a little bit each day. It helps my sanity. Recently it's been like, -1° though, so I've been waiting to do the shopping until I can go alone to avoid that much cold. Instead we do crafts, have dance parties, color, clean up our rooms (Emily likes to destroy her room during nap time), or do anything else that keeps us busy and helps use our minds. We're looking forward to some warm temperatures around here in the next couple months so we can go to a playground or be outside for sure!
10:00 am is snack time and the kiddos know it. For snack, we sit at the table or counter and I generally give them crackers or applesauce with juice. Meal times are the only time the kiddos get juice, otherwise it's water.
After snack time we'll build with blocks, Lincoln logs, or play with our barbies. We always have time allowed for crafts and then time for toys but of course if they want to do something else, we do. I'm not that strict!
11:00 am is when I start getting lunch ready. I'll put music on our a Google Home and the kiddos will either dance together or fight over not wanting to dance together, haha. Lunch always includes a main entree, a veggie, and a fruit. I've found that Brody will sleep much longer if he eats a little at snack time then a lot at lunch keeping him fuller than if he was snacking all day long.
The kiddos know that after lunch, it's nap time. Brody always finishes before Emily so I'll change his diaper and give him a bottle that he takes to his crib. Emily goes to the potty and takes her blanket upstairs to her room and turns her fan on while I lay Brody down. Emily is pretty defiant during nap time. She'll get out go into our craft room and bring back the strangest things into her room. I tried a special lock but she broke through that so now have a gate up but she still opens the door and cries for me so that didn't really does end up sleeping each day, only for about an hour though but that's better than nothing! Brody will sleep for two hours, sometimes three! It's so nice to have him wake up happily rested.
During the one or two hours that Brody is still sleeping Emily gets to do things that she can't do when Brody's around, like stamps or painting, things that a little too messy for her to do when Brody would want to do them too. We do those things with Brody too, just in a more controlled situation!
Around 2:00 pm Brody wakes up. Emily will hear him on the monitor and always tell me that Brody is awake and that we need to go get him. She runs up the stairs and opens his door, goes to his crib and gets on her tippy toes to get closer to him. It's the cutest thing ever. Once we're back downstairs I get them drinks. They know that this is the second time they're allowed to watch tv during the day.
Snack time is at 3:00 pm. It's usually something a little more substantial than the first snack time since it'll hold them over until dinner.
After snack time, it's play time until Daddy is home. Pretty much everyday all the toys are strung out everywhere and it looks like a tornado came through our house by the time Daddy is home but owell.
When Daddy is home I finally get some relief. I mean I know I signed up for this but it's still nice having an ally at home when the kiddos gang up on me with their attitudes! Of course there are still 4 hours until bedtime but at least I have a partner! I try to fit in time for laundry, dishes, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, organizing, picking up all the toys, figuring out dinner plans, fitting in swimming lessons, ballet lessons, grandparent time, church, play dates with friends, as well as showers for ourselves, dates for Mom and Dad, and alone time just to ourselves!
So... THAT'S what this stay at home Mom does all day :)
